Donald J. Meldrum

Donald James "Don" Meldrum

Donald James Meldrum, Jr., 71, of Battle Creek died at Bronson Battle Creek on February 17, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Don was born November 13, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan to Donald J. and Esther (Dixon) Meldrum. He grew up in Harper Woods and Grosse Pointe. He graduated from Grosse Pointe High School, attended Michigan State University three years and then served in the U.S. Marines for two years. Don retired as the Nissan Sales Manager this past December from DeMaagd Nissan GMC, where he was employed over 30 years.

Don is survived by his loving wife, the former, Kay F. Etter; two sons, Donald James Meldrum, III and Jerry L. (Cindy) Vandeburg all of Battle Creek; two grandchildren, Alan Parlier and Kayla Vandeburg and a great-grandson, Brice Parlier. Don was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters, Julie and Becky Vandeburg.

Don enjoyed outdoors and hunting, especially with his dogs, cooking, watching golf and cheering on Tiger Woods; which didn't leave much time for his handyman projects. He enjoyed college sports. especially basketball and was an avid Michigan State fan. When driving, Don made good time and was a great driver. He knew just about every make and model of car ever made and loved to talk about their history. Don loved his customers and always went out of his way to accommodate their needs. Spending time with his family was the highlight of his life.

Don's family will receive friends 3:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home in Battle Creek.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 24, 2014.

Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of South Central Michigan, 2500 Watkins Rd., Battle Creek, MI 49015. Personal messages for the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.

To Donnie Meldrum.....Good luck and bon voyage.  We had a lot of fun both on the Swimming Team (hey we did it!) and in the band (we did it also!).  Don was a really good guy and friend and I am sorry to see him leave us here so soon.  Our best to his family.
