SO sorry to hear.  Had some fun times sitting next to Jon in the A capella choir for a couple years.  Enjoyed sitting with him for dinner at our last reunion and sharing some memories and stories.  A fun high school mate and a fine man.

So very sorry to hear this news. My memories of Jon in high school were that he always had a smile for everyone. My husband , Joel, who just passed in January, enjoyed talking sports, coach to coach, with him at our reunions. My sympathies to his wife and family. He was a grest guy and classmate.

HEARING OF JON RICE'S PASSING BROUGHT MANY MEMORIES OF GPHS IN 1960. IN LIFE, THERE ARE PEOPLE GOD MUST HAVE PLACED AS SIGN POSTS OR PILLARS TO LEAN ON ALONG THE WAY. TEACHERS, COACHES, TEAMMATES ARE OFTEN THOSE PEOPLE.  HIS PARENTS WERE TEACHERS AND COACHES, HE AND HIS WIFE DENNY WERE TEACHERS AND COACHES.  JON WAS ONE OF THOSE PILLARS AND MORE.  HE WAS A TITAN IN THE CLASS OF 1960. GOD GRANTED ME THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING A TEAMMATE AND FRIEND.  HE WAS A GREAT FRIEND.  THERE WERE OTHER LEADERS IN OUR CLASS BUT JON RICE WAS THE POWER AND HEART OF US ALL. HE CAME BACK TO GROSSE POINTE SOUTH TO SPEND HIS TEACHING AND COACHING CAREER THERE.  MY SISTER KNEW JON,  MY BROTHER PLAYED FOOTBALL FOR JON AS COACH.  THERE SHOULD BE MORE THAN JUST HONORING JON'S MEMORY.  THERE SHOULD BE A CELEBRATION AND TRIBUTE.

I’m saddened!  And even more after reading everyone’s comments.  Jon will surely be missed.  When Jon first hired in at GPHSS my mom was there as manager of the bookstore. Mom thought the world of Jon!  “Such a fine young man”, she would say.  What a guy!  Heaven has a new star!

Jon was one of those classmates I thought would live forever. He was so full of energy and personality. I’m saddened by the fact he fell ill and died.  He impacted many peoples lives who will always remember what a super guy he was. Sally Marsh Giacobbe

Below is a note from Denyse Rice regarding the April 29, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Memorial gathering for Jon at the Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center at 20025 Mack Plaza Drive:

"The get together is very casual, just wanted people who knew Jon to have a chance to visit, share stories and remember his joy of life. No formal talk, come and go as you please. I will be there with my son, Russell, daughter , Jane and son- in -law and 5 grandchildren.  Hope this helps with plans, Denyse Rice"
