1942-2025
Julie Gathman Burkhart, 82, passed away on April 27, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky. A longtime resident of Asheville and a devoted member of the community, Julie will be remembered by those who knew her for her vibrant spirit and enduring passions.
Born on May 13, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, Julie spent her early years in Southern California before returning to Detroit to complete her education. She graduated from Grosse Pointe High School and went on to earn her degree from Wayne State University. After college, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in advertising. Her professional journey included roles at PGW, a firm representing television stations across the country, and the renowned advertising agency J. Walter Thompson.
Julie's interests extended well beyond the workplace. She was an avid tennis player, enjoying matches both in New York and later in Asheville. A lifelong lover of words and language, she was also deeply devoted to solving The New York Times crossword puzzles.
Her commitment to service was evident through her dedicated volunteer work with Asheville Hospice, where she gave generously of her time and compassion.
Julie was the daughter of Virginia Thorp Gathman and Robert (Bob) Gathman, former Vice President and General Manager of Fisher Body, a division of General Motors. She is survived by her husband, Tom Burkhart, formerly of Asheville and now residing in Louisville, Kentucky, as well as five nieces and nephews.
